| One passenger died on the spot and 10 others suffered injuries in a freak accident involving an express train and a tipper lorry near the Athipettu station in the Chennai-Gudur section in the early hours of Friday. Two of them were seriously injured.
The deceased was identified as S. Anandarao (25), from Kuthur village in Visakhapatnam district in Andhra Pradesh. The injured belonged to the same village.
All of them were on their way to Erode by the Bokaro/Dhanbad-Alleppey Express. The injured are undergoing treatment at the General Hospital here.
According to Southern Railway officials, the lorry had entered the railway land unauthorisedly near the Athipettu station and the lorry driver on seeing the train abandoned the vehicle.
As the lorry was close to the track, its rear portion brushed an unreserved compartment in which the deceased and the injured were travelling on the footboard.
The engine driver, on hearing the sound, stopped the train immediately.
The injured were brought to the General Hospital by the train.
Based on the orders of Southern Railway General Manager Thomas Varghese, a case has been registered against the lorry driver. R.P. Agarwal, Commissioner of Railway Safety, South Central Circle, Secunderabad, will conduct a statutory enquiry at the Divisional Railway Office here on May 1 and May 2, according to a Southern Railway release.
