| Pereira to be charged with murder |

| The Maharashtra government has decided to charge Alister Pereira with murder days after a trial court gave him six months of jail.
The verdict caused a public outcry against what many felt was a light punishment in a hit-and-run case that killed seven pavement dwellers in Bandra.
The charge of murder against Alister is not framed by the prosecution in the trial but the government.
The state has said in its appeal to the Mumbai High Court that the trial court, on its own, should have convicted him for murder under Sec 302 of IPC.
The appeal for tougher punishment will come up before the High Court on May 3. Pereira was convicted under 304(A) - causing death by negligence.
The main ground for the state's appeal is that the evidence on record did not show that Alister was drunk beyond permissible limits, which his blood test had indicated.
