| Though it has been three weeks since the government declared the Pallikaranai marshland a reserve forest, dumping, burning of garbage, and poaching continues unabated.
According to environmental activists, for it to effectively function as a natural drain, groundwater recharging unit and support birds and small life forms, the northern segment where garbage is being dumped needs to be protected and restored. The only indicator of the change in the status of the marshland is two boards on the Pallikaranai-Thoraipakkam Road announcing that the area is a `reserve forest'.
While welcoming the government's move identifying a core part of the marsh as a reserve forest, activists say the impact of the garbage dumping is spread over 132 hectare in the northern parts. It affected residential localities such as Perungudi and southern Velachery and areas such as Kalkuttai.
