9 killed as bus falls off bridge
The APSRTC bus that fell into the Gundlakamma rivulet in Guntur district
 INDIA , 3-May-2007  3:57:29 AM
Nine persons were killed and 34 seriously injured when an Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation bus plunged from a bridge into the Gundlakamma rivulet at Peddavaram in Guntur district on Wednesday.

The driver of APSRTC bus, going from Arumuru in Nizamabad district to Vinzamuru in Nellore district, lost control and hit the railing of the bridge over the first pier. The bus went 20 feet down and hit the ground upside down at 3.40 a.m. Seven persons died on the spot and the bus looked like a mangled cardboard box.

A majority of the passengers were construction workers employed in and around Hyderabad. They were going to Kanigiri in Prakasam district to attend a village festival `Polamamba Jatara' along with family members. Among the dead were five men, two women and two boys below seven years. The Government announced Rs.1 lakh ex gratia to the next of kin of the dead.

Big bang

There was no water between the first and second pier of the bridge. It took two hours to extricate all the passengers. A big bang alerted some persons sitting in a tea stall 200 metres away on the Hyderabad-Kurnool State Highway. And they called the emergency service.

People in vehicles behind the bus plunged into rescue work but the task was rendered difficult as it was pitch-dark.

Those in the front seats, behind the driver, were the worst-affected. Three passengers, especially, went through the trauma of being extricated for about three hours. An earthmover brought the bus to normal position.

Those killed were identified as Tammisetty Srinivasa Rao (35), Gorige Venkata Subbaiah (33), Gorige Prasad Thonti Komati (30), Gudipati Sivakumari (24), T. Siddhartha Reddy (5), his mother Tammireddy Kalpana (25), Gudipati Sreenu (7), Ugadi Vasanta Rao (45), and 3-month-old Muvvala Chendu.
