| Delhi has just witnessed an underwater birth which is a first for India too.
After delivering two other children under water in the UK, Charlotte Walter was convinced that this was the right way for her third child Violet as well, who became India's first water baby.
Water birthing is a procedure in which a woman delivers in a basin or tub of warm water.
''It is better, more emotional, less painful,'' said Charlotte.
A huge pool is filled with at least 10 litres distilled water at body temperature in which the pregnant mother is immersed after she begins labour. She remains in it till the baby is delivered.
Benefits of water births
It leads to reduction in infections
There is no requirement for pain killers since the warm water helps to relax muscles
Shorter labour duration.
But the procedure doesn't come cheap. It can cost between Rs 18,000 to 50,000.
''It requires a special birthing pool in water. The lady is immersed in water at body temperature. The cervix also dilates better during delivery. It's gentler, more pleasant,'' said Dr Urvashi Sehgal, Gynaecologist.
Water birthing has been practiced for a long time. But the need for constant supervision during labour by skilled doctors or nurses prevented it from becoming a popular method.
With the birth of the first water baby, women who can afford now have an option of having a relatively pain free and safe delivery.
