Geeta Johri to head fake encounter
Gujarat IPS officer Geeta Johri will head the fake encounter probe.
 INDIA , 3-May-2007  10:23:56 AM
Gujarat IPS officer Geeta Johri will head the fake encounter probe.

Johri has been reinstated on a day when the Supreme Court asked why she was removed in the first place from the investigation into Sohrabuddin Sheikh's murder.

She's the Gujarat CID officer who exposed the staged encounter. It was on the basis of her report that three IPS officers were arrested.

Gujarat CID DIG Rajneesh Rai is now out of the probe. Rai had replaced Johri to head the case earlier.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court on Thursday decided to reserve the final order for a CBI probe in Gujarat fake encounter case till May 15. The apex court also sought a final report from Gujarat government in two weeks.

A Bench comprising Justices Tarun Chatterjee and P K Balasubramanyam also asked the Gujarat Government to give its report on the allegation that senior IPS officer Geeta Johri was ''taken off the investigation for some reasons''.

In the Parliament's Upper House, Shahid Siddiqui of the Samajwadi Party said that Muslims were being branded as terrorists and killed in fake encounters in Gujarat.

The Samajwadi Party and Gujarat's governing Bharatiya Janata Party raised slogans against each other in the house.

Officer in disgrace

Three senior police officers under arrest are at the centre of a probe - one of them is DG Vanzara.

Vanzara and his team are linked to at least four other similar executions. It named all the victims as terrorists planning to kill Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi.

The families of the victims want the cases reopened and the Central government has backed a wider probe.

Meanwhile, in retaliation to the Gujarat government banning the entry of journalists in the Gujarat Police headquarters, a group of more than 50 journalists have written a letter to the Chief Justice of India seeking his intervention.
