Bihar asks Nepal for power dues
The Electricity Board supplies around 60 megawatts of power to Nepal everyday after a treaty was signed.

As if there was not shortage of power or money now Nepal has to pay up over Rs 54 crore to the Bihar State Electricity Board.

The Electricity Board supplies around 60 megawatts of power to Nepal everyday after a treaty was signed.

The state has also requested for payment of current monthly power bills amounting to another Rs 7-8 crores each month.

Despite being a power-deficit state, Bihar supplies around 60 mega watts of power daily to Nepal to honour the treaty.

A letter has been written to the Nepal government.

''On one hand we have a power deficit and on the other hand, the electricity board is running on a loss. In both circumstances we have to improve our

Electricity Board. The government of India has been informed,'' said Sushil Kumar Modi, Deputy Chief Minister, Bihar.

Plants renovated

Bihar's own power plants at Barauni and Muzaffarpur are closed and being renovated now.

The state draws power from the central pool getting around 950 MW every day against its allocated share of 1170 MW.

However, its estimated daily requirement is 1500 to 1800 MW.

Working hard to overcome its own power deficiencies Bihar is honouring India's commitment to Nepal but the Himalayan region is itself going through difficult times.

Authorities in Nepal are finding it tough to recover power dues from subscribers in the Terai plains due to the unrest there early this year.

''Actually as per their statement all the Bill Collection centres in the Terai area have been locked by the Madhesis. The Nepalese authorities are unable to get their revenues from those areas.

''So, they are also in problem in collecting their revenues from those Terai areas because of the agitations and they've already locked their Collection Centres,'' said S K Ghosh, Spokesperson, Bihar State Electricity Board.
