Team to probe fake encounters
''We have seen media reports and we have ordered an enquiry into this matter. An Additional DGP level officer will investigate this,'' said NPS Aulakh
 INDIA , 5-May-2007  2:33:32 AM
With fake encounter cases making the headlines around the country and after the recent reports of three such cases in Punjab, the DGP has set up a fact-finding team to investigate the reports.

''We have seen media reports and we have ordered an enquiry into this matter. An Additional DGP level officer will investigate this,'' said NPS Aulakh, DGP, Punjab.

This is the first reaction from the police after a former terrorist Gurnam singh resurfaced in Gurdaspur last week. He said the police records showed him to be dead and some officers had even claimed a Rs 25 lakh reward.

''When they could not find me, they declared that I am killed in a police encounter and they took Rs 25 lakh for the job,'' said Gurnaam Singh Bandala, former terrorist.

Some time ago, the police claimed that they had killed Gurcharan Singh Giani, brother of former chief of Khalistan Commando Force, Surjit singh Painta, in an encounter in Shivpuri district of Madhya Pradesh.

Later, Punjab police officials who were part of the encounter team, had claimed a reward of Rs five lakh. Now Giani has returned to Punjab and has been living there for a year.

''I found out from the newspapers that I am declared dead. At that time I was working as a driver in Shivpuri district of MP,'' said Gurcharan Singh Giani, Former Member, Khalistan Commando Force.

Former Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh says that these fake killings should be probed thoroughly.

''We would like those people who have been doing these killings to be taken to task. I am all for it,'' said Capt Amarinder Singh, Former Chief Minister, Punjab
