Road named after Arjun Singh
Union HRD Minister Arjun Singh has been at the receiving end of many protests and prickly criticism in the aftermath of the quota debate.
 INDIA , 5-May-2007  2:37:7 AM
But now, the embattled minister finds himself squirming not with the tricky issue of reservations- but with the issue of a new learning centre that's named after him.

A new Distance Learning Centre in Jamia Milia University has been named after the HRD minister which places him on the same pedestal as the other international names at least on this campus.

Special honour

It's a special honour but they have been questions raised over whether it's appropriate for a cabinet minister to have a centre named after him.

''I am not going to say anything. This centre has been named, If you don't like it you can break it,'' he said.

In fact a road in the university has also been named after the minister. It's now called Sheh-rai-Arjun Singh road and it connects the university to the teachers' accommodation.

''Normally we are against such projects. But this is not something new. Many ministers have come and gone. But no one worked for this institute like him and we should appreciate this,'' said Rais Khan, Teachers Association, Jamia.

Naturally, the centre has been financed by the government but what's surprising is that it has been named after Arjun Singh.

''There are some new things in life as well, you just keep speculating,'' said Mushirul Hassan, VC Jamia University.

But for all his bravado it seems the HRD minister is embarrassed by the compliment.

He was not present at the inauguration of either the road nor the centre but did show up just half an hour later to inaugurate the Naom Chomsky Centre.
