New twist in fake encounter
Until now the trail of the Sohrabuddin killings had led to the Udaipur marble mines
 INDIA , 8-May-2007  1:31:31 AM
In a new twist to the fake encounter's controversy, Rajasthan police sources have claimed that Gujarat ATS DIG D G Vanzara had been paid off by the builders of Ahmedabad to eliminate the Sohrabuddin gang.

Until now the trail of the Sohrabuddin killings had led to the Udaipur marble mines. It was alleged that Rajasthan's marble mafia had paid for the killing of Sohrabuddin Sheikh.

According to Rajasthan police sources, Sohrabuddin started off as a petty criminal from Madhya Pradesh. He was hired as a supari killer by the marble miners and dealers to bump off Hamid Lala, a dreaded criminal and extortionist who was giving them sleepless nights.

On December 31, 2004 Sohrabuddin and his gang of five men killed Lala at point blank range. But then he himself became the new Hamid Lala, extorting money.

His local contact was Tusliram Prajapati who was from around Udaipur. As his extortion threats got worse he was driven out by the new tough Udaipur SP Dinesh M N.

Sohrabuddin then began operations in Gujarat where he at first becomes a strongman for city builders, getting paid off to grab land and vacate houses and get pending money out of rival builders.

Rajasthan police records claim to show that Sohrabuddin was working closely with at least six top builders in Gujarat, a share of which used to go men in uniform.

But then, they claim, Sohrabuddin started extorting money from them, threatening to spill their secrets and making both the police and the builders his enemy.

The builder mafia went to DCP Crime Branch, D G Vanzara, for help. Soon cases against Sohrabuddin and his gang in Gujarat started piling up.

Finally, sources say, in 2005 the builders paid Vanzara a sum of about Rs 10 crore to get rid of Sohrabuddin.

War of accusations

Sources say, while Udaipur SP Dinesh M N was still trying to pin Sohrabuddin in the Hamid Lala killing he found Sohrabuddin was also on Vanzara's wanted list in Gujarat.
