'93 blasts: TADA court acquits 20
A TADA court has formally acquitted 20 people in the 1993 Mumbai blasts case
 INDIA , 9-May-2007  3:57:14 AM
A TADA court has formally acquitted 20 people in the 1993 Mumbai blasts case. Three persons who were acquitted, didn't appear in the court to collect their acquittal letters.

On Wednesday, after 14 long and agonsing years, the court finally began the process of handing out sentences of the 100 people held guilty, in what is being called the biggest trial in Indian judicial history.

And at the centre of national interest is the fate of the man who has become the face of the blasts.

The shadow of the AK 56 rifle and the 9 mm pistol still looms large on Sanjay Dutt. He could face a maximum of five years in prison.

But Dutt has petitioned against serving time in jail, saying he has done a lot for society. But it isn't that simple. Others convicted have said if the actor gets a lighter sentence, then they should be treated at par.

The TADA court summoned all the 123 accused to announce the quantum of sentence.

It's a process that could take several days. Hundred people were found guilty on various charges of planting bombs, conspiring and helping in conducting the blasts.

The guilty also include four members of the Memon family, all guilty of conspiracy storing arms and ammunition. The prosecution has demanded that they be hung to death.

Sanjay Dutt and several others have all been found guilty under the less serious Arms Act, besides policemen and customs officers who were bribed for a few lakh rupees.

47 people have been convicted for planting bombs and conspiracy.

Three accused were granted concessions, while 44 could be sent to the gallows.

Five have been convicted only under the customs act, who could see punishment between 3 to 7 years

Four, including Dutt have been convicted under the Arms Act for which the punishment is a minimum of five years.

''It will take more than 7-8 days or more to complete the quantum of sentences. The accused have been held guilty under different sections,'' said Farhana Shah, Defence Lawyer.
