Families grieve loss
Two of the people killed were young IT professionals and a security guard.
 INDIA , 10-May-2007  0:55:12 AM
Four people have been arrested and 40 others have been detained in connection with the attack on the Dinakaran office in Madurai, which killed three people on Wednesday.

The incident took place after the newspaper carried an opinion poll which ranked Tamil Nadu Chief Minister's son Stalin as a better successor to Karunanidhi than Stalin's older brother Araghiri.

Two of the people killed were young IT professionals and a security guard.

Twenty-one-year-old Vinod Kumar was a promising electronic engineer who was in charge of hardware maintenance.

He had dreams of moving to the US soon and the family had spent all they had to fulfill his dream.

''He wanted to take care of his mother. We can't bear this,'' said Ganesan, Vinod's uncle.

Another couple arrived from neighbouring Ramanthapuram district. After a one year long stint with Dinkaran, their engineer son Gopinath was about to resign from his job to move to Chennai.

Muneeswari's husband Muthu too was burnt alive as he tried to prevent the mob from entering the premises. She has three little children and does not know how to explain to them that their father will never return home.

''My husband has gone. What will I tell my children?'' said Muneeswari.

The families of these victims compare the tragedy to the Dharmapuri bus burning incident seven years ago in which three young girls were burnt alive.

They want the government to appoint an enquiry commission to bring those responsible to justice.

''Earlier they had burnt the girls in a bus, this time in an office. They paid them a paltry Rs 5000 as salary, and several crores worth of lives have been lost. The government should appoint an enquiry commission,'' said Murugesan, Gopinath's father.

Reacting to the violence in Madurai, AIADMK chief and Karunanidhi's political opponent Jayalalithaa said Karunanidhi has been unable to maintain law and order in the state despite holding the Home portfolio.
