Temperatures fall in north India
Four people, including a couple, were killed as trees tumbled and fell on them in Jaunpur and six seriously injured, police said.
 INDIA , 10-May-2007  1:53:22 AM
Weather on Wednesday remained cool in most parts of northern India as temperatures took a downward swing following rains and dusty winds in some states even as seven people were killed and 14 injured as a thunderstorm lashed different parts of Uttar Pradesh.

Four people, including a couple, were killed as trees tumbled and fell on them in Jaunpur and six seriously injured, police said. Two children were killed and six hurt in Bhadohi while a girl was killed and two persons were seriously wounded as a tree fell on their house in Kaushambi.

Maximum temperatures remained below normal in most parts of Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh as they received light to moderate rains. At most places in the plains, the mercury was around two notches below normal. Hisar recorded a high of 40.9 degrees Celsius, Chandigarh 38.4 and Amritsar 36.2.

An active upper cyclonic circulation that led to heavy dust storms and thundershowers helped in the fall in mercury levels for the second consecutive day in Rajasthan, relieving people from the prolonged heat spell.

Dip in temperatures

Kota was the hottest in the region with a high of 44.4 degrees Celsius. Jaipur registered a maximum of 43.6 degrees, Jodhpur 43.4, Jaisalmer 42.6 and Ajmer 42.4 degrees.

Moderate rainfall in Shimla and other parts of Himachal Pradesh also brought down temperatures in the state. Shimla, which recorded 2.5 mm rainfall on Tuesday night, had a maximum temperature of 24.9 degrees and a minimum of 10.6.

Rains in these states also led to a dip in temperatures in the national capital. The maximum temperature was 38.1.

At least eight persons, four in Punjab, three in Rajasthan and one in Madhya Pradesh, have died since the onset of the sweltering heat conditions.
