| Carrying forward UPA's efforts to choose a successor to President APJ Abdul Kalam, the alliance Chairperson Sonia Gandhi on Thursday held consultations with CPI General Secretary AB Bardhan and Forward Bloc leader Debabrata Biswas on the issue.
CPI(M) leaders did not meet Gandhi as party General Secretary Prakash Karat informed the Congress leadership that the party would decide its plan of action after the results of Uttar Pradesh assembly elections on Friday.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had already initiated the exercise of consultations by holding one round of talks with several Left leaders including CPI(M) General Secretary
Prakash Karat.
The race for the post of President is expected to warm up as the results of the UP assembly polls are set to have a major impact on the composition of the electoral college for the election.
The value of each legislator's vote in UP was 203, compared with 25 of Arunachal Pradesh.
The Prime Minister as also Gandhi are expected to utilize their presence in Chennai on Friday to hold more consultations with DMK supremo M Karunandhi on who would occupy the top post.
The Left leaders would also be present in the capital of Tamil Nadu for felicitating Karunanidhi on his 50 years as a legislator.
