Karunanidhi seeks `gifts'
Mr. Karunanidhi's tireless efforts at empowering the downtrodden had enabled them to make a mark in both politics and the country's legislatures,
 INDIA , 12-May-2007  1:42:9 AM
It was a salutation to one of the longest and most illustrious political careers in the history of the country when national and regional leaders together hailed Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi as "the tallest among India's political leaders," a "champion of social justice" and a "crusader for the cause of the downtrodden" at the function held to commemorate his fifty unbroken years as a legislator in Chennai on Friday.

Among those present were Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Congress president Sonia Gandhi, Finance Minister P. Chidambaram, Railways Minister Lalu Prasad, Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar, Union Chemicals and Fertilisers Minister Ram Vilas Paswan, former Prime Minister I. K. Gujral, CPI(M) general secretary Prakash Karat and CPI general secretary A.B. Bardhan.

Mr. Manmohan Singh released a souvenir, which was received by Mr. Gujral.

"The substantive achievement of [Mr. Karunanidhi's] remarkable fifty years as legislator is his contribution to the social justice movement and translating that mission into legislative and administrative measures that reached the lowest sections of society," Mr. Karat said, adding that he was also a champion of federalism who had a profound sympathy for the ordinary people. "He exemplifies the best of the Dravidian ideology," he said.

Mr. Karunanidhi was one of the architects of the UPA government and had stood foremost in putting across the idea of social justice, especially in the issue of reservations, Mr. Bardhan said.

Tamil Nadu had emerged as the centre of social justice and Mr. Karunanidhi's mission had been to bring the downtrodden to the mainstream of society, Mr. Lalu Prasad said.
