 INDIA , 15-May-2007  0:15:17 AM
Describing the attack on a student of M. S. University in Vadodara as the latest instance of bludgeoning of the public right of expression, a number of artists, politicians and civil rights activists on Monday pledged their support to all the beleaguered artists who have so far been attacked by members of the Sangh Parivar.

Gathered under the banner of Sahmat, people from different walks of life stood outside Rabindra Bhawan here protesting against senior artists such as M. F. Husain being made targets of violence and innumerable law suits "whose intent is to browbeat and intimidate freedom of expression".

Referring to the latest incident at M. S. University, artist Ram Rahman said it was done with full State collusion.

"On May 10, Neeraj Jain, a known BJP activist, along with a group of Vishwa Hindu Parishad members, entered the premises of the Fine Arts Faculty where students' art works were on display as part of the process of annual student evaluation. They used violence against Chandramohan, a Master's candidate, and the police arrested him. The charge levelled against him is that of hurting religious sentiments. He was released from jail on bail only today."

Condemning the attack by Sangh Parivar members, Communist Party of India (Marxist) Polit Bureau member Sitaram Yechury said the unique diversity of the country needs to be celebrated.

"We should see the attack in the larger context. Such attacks that reflect personal intolerance and vendetta cannot be tolerated. We need to strengthen the bond of commonality," he said, adding that he had moved a notice in the Rajya Sabha two days ago for a discussion on the issue.

Describing the attacks on artists as "distressing happenings", Communist Party of India secretary D. Raja said the latest incident was nothing but "a fascist attack on our culture and freedom of expression": "It is an attack on our institution.
