| The Fee Regulatory Committee appointed by the Government to fix the fee structure for self-financing colleges has decided to retain the existing annual tuition fee of Rs.38,700 for private engineering colleges in the State during this year.
The committee, headed by the former judge P.A. Mohammed, at a sitting here on Thursday decided to go by the K.T. Thomas Committee recommendation for Rs.38,700 as annual tuition fee, implemented in private engineering colleges last year.
However, the committee made it clear that the fee structure announced on Thursday would be temporary, as it could not take a final decision on the fee based on the documents submitted by the managements.
Members of the committee said there was no concrete proof for deciding whether the institutions had gone by the guidelines issued by the All India Council for Technical Education regarding the infrastructure and recurring expenditure required for maintaining the institutions. The exact details of the salary offered to teachers and non-teaching staff were also not available.
Depreciation claims
The committee found that there was no proof for supplementing the depreciation incurred in the maintenance of buildings, equipment and machinery in each engineering college. In order to obtain the details of the expenditure incurred by the colleges, the committee decided to visit the campuses in the coming days. A detailed inquiry will be held to verify the claims made by the managements.
