Jeans ad stirs up controversy
The company is amazed at the hostility towards an ad designed to catch the interest of its young customers
 INDIA , 19-May-2007  2:7:29 AM
An ad for straight jeans saying 'not everything is as straight' has offended a Bangalore based group called Morelove.

The posters for the jeans depict young people, of the same sex, in close proximity and this, the protestors say, will promote promiscuity and homosexuality.

''The Lee brand is known for promoting their products using sex and sexuality. It is suggestive of promiscuity and lesbianism, which is basically insensitive to the Indian culture.

Maybe a boy and a girl would have been well suited - we are living in a post-modern era so it is okay. But having two girls in the momentum of lesbianism is quite insensitive,'' said Dominic Dixon, Executive Director, Morelove

The company is amazed at the hostility towards an ad designed to catch the interest of its young customers.

''We believe that people can do whatever they want to do. We live in an extremely democratic environment, we are the largest democracy in the world. We believe that people can make their own choices and do whatever they want to do.

I don't think we are promoting anything here, we don't condemn it, we don't condone. We are a very, very fun loving brand and we are bringing out the fun loving aspect of things,'' said Chakor Jain, Business Head, Lee.

NDTV: Is there any chance of your withdrawing this ad?

Jain: I don't think so - because we really don't see that there is anything offensive in this particular ad.

Are we becoming too intolerant, or as some people seem to fear, is society in fact too liberal now? Well, there are clearly at least two sides to every issue.
