| Creating an all-time record, as much as 82.29 per cent of the candidates qualified for higher studies in the Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) examination, the results of which were announced by Education Minister M.A. Baby here on Sunday morning.
The pass percentage without moderation surpassed the previous best of 70.06 per cent with moderation declared in 2004.
A total of 4,58,763 students wrote the examination. Of this 3,76,386 candidates were declared eligible for higher studies. As many as 4,269 candidates secured A+ grade for all the 10 subjects. A total of 20,208 students secured A and 50,441 won B+.
The following are the remaining grades: B (95,979), C+ (1,62,167), C (2,54,650), D+ (3,76,386), D (71,924) and E (6,076).
Among the Scheduled Caste candidates, 77 secured A+ for all subjects. Among the Scheduled Tribe candidates, the corresponding figure was 19. The highest number of students who got A+ for all subjects came from schools in Thrissur (538) and the lowest number from Idukki (70).
In the Private New Scheme, 52.43 per cent candidates qualified while in the Old Scheme it was 35.83 per cent. Only grades would be recorded in the SSLC certificate.
The performance of 104 schools (97 in the State, and seven in Lakshadweep) identified for special attention in view of their poor performance last year had secured impressive results thanks to `Quality education the right of children,' a Rs.5-crore project implemented by the Education Department in association with the local bodies, teachers' associations and Parent-Teacher Associations. "A preliminary study found that nearly 25 per cent of the students enrolled in these schools could not eat noon meals. The problem was addressed as a part of the project," Mr. Baby said.
