| It has been almost three weeks since she was attacked by a ferocious stray dog near her house in Peenya Dasarahalli but four-year-old Swati M.R. is still a little shaken by the episode.
The dog pulled out part of her left cheek, leaving a gaping wound on her face. According to doctors the injury was serious. But Swati is lucky not to have met the same fate as Sridevi and Manjunath who died after they were mauled by street dogs a few months ago.
Timely help
Timely medical help at the Department of Plastic and Reconstruction Surgery at the Victoria Hospital has ensured that Swati does not have to live with a mutilated face all her life. In fact, the gaping wound is now only a scar which will fade away in a few months.
At a time when the State Government and voluntary organisations seemed to have reached nowhere in their efforts to control the number of stray dogs in Bangalore or to check the increasing number of dog bite cases, this department in Victoria Hospital is quietly conducting reconstructive surgeries on dog bite victims — most of them from poor families — totally free of cost.
In the last one month, the department has done surgeries on three children who were bitten by dogs.
In Swati's case, the doctors, led by Head of Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery M. Shankarappa, removed a small portion of skin from behind the ear and transplanted it to the wound in such way that both the lesions are completely covered.
`Commendable'
"When I saw her after she was savagely attacked by the dog, I was so miserable because I thought that she would never get back to normal. What they (doctors at Victoria Hospital) have done is commendable especially because it is a government hospital," said Swati's mother Manju.
Another two-year-old girl, the daughter of a construction labourer, was also operated upon after her eyelid was torn off when she was mauled by a pack of dogs near a construction site.
