Amitabh in trouble over land
It is alleged that the land which belonged to the Gram Samaj in 1983 was illegally transferred to Bachchan by projecting him as a farmer.
 INDIA , 22-May-2007  2:28:13 AM
After the Samajwadi Party's ouster in Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections the Bachchan family's rosy days in the state are clearly over.

Actor Amitabh Bachchan, who is already under fire for his advertisements praising the previous Mulayam Singh government, is now in the eye of the storm once again over a piece of land in the Barabanki district.

It is alleged that the land which belonged to the Gram Samaj in 1983 was illegally transferred to Bachchan by projecting him as a farmer.

Bachchan acquired 90,000 sq feet land in Daulatpur area of Barabanki registered in back date in his name since 1983. Residents say the land is village property to which they are the first claimants.

''They say they will take away the house. How can they do that? We have stayed here since the 70s. We have families here,'' said Karnail Singh, claimant of land.

Amitabh's property in Barabanki is in a remote area where there is no road access for at least 15 kilometers, making many wonder why the superstar is even interested in such land.

Identity secret

State Congress sources say Amitabh wanted to keep his identity secret as the objective behind the allotment was to not only get prime land for peanuts but pose as a farmer and entitle himself for acquisition of an agricultural land in Maharashtra, where none other than a farmer could acquire agricultural land.

Sources also say Amitabh dropped his surname Bachchan on land registration papers for obvious reasons.

''I think if a big name is attached it should be probed thoroughly. This matter will go to the High Court,'' said Pramod Tiwari, leader, CLP.

The district magistrate of Barabanki had recently submitted his report, finding irregularities in this land allotment apparently done at the behest of close friend Amar Singh.

The complaint also alleges that Jaya Bachchan, wife and Rajya Sabha MP, had concealed information on this property in her nomination papers for the Upper House.
