Family tussle over Indian chef's bo
For months his family had no clue why he had not been calling them. His wife Anita wrote several letters to the Italian embassy in New Delhi
 INDIA , 24-May-2007  1:59:36 AM
The body of 45-year-old Indian chef Ram Chandra, murdered in Italy late last year, was finally flown in to Delhi on Wednesday night.

While Ram Chandra's widow Anita -- has claimed the body, there was an ugly scene at the airport with his family trying to claim the body as well.

Ram Chandra's relatives anxiously waited for the arrival of his body from Italy. Chandra, who had been working as a chef in Italy for close to 12 years, was found murdered at his hotel last November.

For months his family had no clue why he had not been calling them. His wife Anita wrote several letters to the Italian embassy in New Delhi but all in vain.

Information on net

Then suddenly in March this year she learnt of her husband's murder not from the Indian government but from an article posted on the net.

Anita then sought help from the Ministry of External Affairs but was told that she would have to pay Rs 3 lakhs for transporting the body that had been lying at a mortuary in a hospital in Milan.

Helpless Anita then approached the Delhi High Court but the government counsel told the court that her husband was drawing a handsome salary in Italy and owned a BMW in which he was found murdered.

But the court asked the government to arrange to bring his mortal remains to India.

''The embassy didn't give me any information. Neither was MEA aware of anything. Till the last minute, they had no information. They still don't know the cause of the death,'' said Anita Gupta, Ram Chandra's widow.

FIR lodged

During the wait at the airport the family's grief gave way to tension with Anita's estranged in-laws arguing that they had the right to take their son's body to Himachal Pradesh.

But Anita maintained that as she had fought single-handedly for the return of the body, she would hold the cremation in Faridabad.
