Anil Ambani's SEZ plan in trouble
The UP government has approached the Centre expressing reservation in allotting land for a proposed Special Economic Zone promoted by Anil Ambani
 INDIA , 24-May-2007  10:19:34 AM
The Uttar Pradesh government has approached the Centre expressing reservation in allotting land for a proposed Special Economic Zone (SEZ) promoted by Anil Ambani group.

After firing a few bureaucrats, UP Chief Minister Mayawati has fired her first big salvo at people associated with her predecessor Mulayam Singh Yadav.

Anil Ambani's proposal for a 1200-acre SEZ is in trouble as the UP government has pointed out violations of regulations in the proposal.

The land proposed to be allotted for SEZ was not contiguous, which was a basic requirement for allotment. Apparently a road runs through the SEZ.

UP has not cancelled the proposal yet. The Centre's response is awaited.

''The land bought by Reliance at Noida was to be contiguous as decided by the Government of India. But it was not. The Government will now take a decision on this issue,'' said Shashank Shekhar Singh, Cabinet Secretary, UP.

Cabinet guidelines

The new Special Economic Zone has been planned on two pieces of land with a road dividing both the plots.

The Cabinet guidelines say that an SEZ can be established on a single piece of land having one entry and one exit point because every movement in and out has to be monitored and there are customs checks involved.

The two pieces of land for the proposed SEZ would mean there would be more entry and exit points.

The State government has set up a high-level committee, headed by the Industrial Development Commissioner and Principal Finance Secretary.

It will report in two weeks on all proposals of previous government on hi-tech cities, SEZs and other IT projects.

The Reliance projects came to light in UP after farmers' agitation over the Dadri power project of the Anil Ambani-led Reliance group in July 2006 for which land was allotted during the previous regime in UP
