Naidu for alternative economic
Though the reforms had generated wealth, only 2 to 3 per cent were enjoying its benefits.
 INDIA , 28-May-2007  2:38:19 AM
The three-day silver jubilee Mahanadu of the Telugu Desam Party began here on Sunday with party president N. Chandrababu Naidu calling for an alternative economic policy to ensure that fruits of reforms reached the poor and the middle classes.

Inaugurating the meeting, Mr. Naidu, in his 75-minute speech, lamented that the gulf between the poor and the rich was widening with the reforms failing to improve the lot of the common man.

Though the reforms had generated wealth, only 2 to 3 per cent were enjoying its benefits.

Even Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had acknowledged the fact that the benefits were not reaching the poor.

Significantly, he did not touch upon the theme of integrated State, which used to be stridently projected by the party.

Mr. Naidu also did not mention the Third Front, even as he forecast that the TDP and other regional parties would play a key role in national politics in the future.

Virtually setting the tempo for the 2009 electoral battle with the Congress, the TDP leader declared, amid thunderous applause, that 40 per cent youth would be infused into the organisation.

For the first time, he also specified their age group — 20-30 years — saying it would lay the party's foundation for the next 25 years.

Discipline is key

Mr. Naidu expressed anguish over certain incidents involving party leaders and called upon functionaries to maintain discipline and work collectively.

Launching a blistering attack against the Congress, he dubbed the State and Central Governments "anti-poor" and "corrupt." Charging the Centre with "cheating" farmers in the name of special economic zones, he said the party would launch a fight till they get justice.

He sought a constitutional amendment for providing 27 per cent reservations for OBCs in educational institutions.

The town turned yellow with TDP flags, festoons and buntings dotting every nook and corner.
