| Doctors at the Ambedkar Hospital in Chhattisgarh have begun performing a very difficult surgery later on Tuesday.
They are trying to separate 10-month-old conjoined twins Ram and Laxman joined at the stomach and sharing a liver.
When one sleeps, the other stays awake almost as if he is watching over his twin. Their mother says that feeding them and taking care of them is a Herculean task.
''It's difficult to pick them up, difficult to take them to the bathroom and very difficult to change their clothes,'' said Prembati Bai, Mother.
Hopefully, after the operation Ram and Laxman will lead separate lives after doctors at the Ambedkar Hospital in Chhattisgarh operate on them.
''They have hernia since birth and they share a liver separating them is the main aim of the surgery,'' said Dr Ashok Kumar Sharma, Doctor.
This is where the twins have spent the first 10 months of their lives. And everyone, from the nurses to the doctors, is excited about the surgery.
''I am a little nervous. They have been living here for so long we hope that both of them have a healthy future ahead,'' said Sheila Jacob, Nurse.
As the hours go by, the prayers increase. A lot depends on the expertise of the medical team and the infrastructure.
The surgery is complicated and experts say chances of survival are less than 30 per cent in most cases.
But for the moment, this is something no one would want to consider.
