| Six people, four civilians and two policemen, have been killed in clashes between the police and protestors belonging to the Gujjar community.
The firing took place in Patoli and Pepalkhera villages in Rajashtan's Dausa district.
Thousands of people belonging to the Gujjar community blocked the Jaipur-Agra highway demanding Scheduled Tribe status for their community.
The Gujjars are presently included in the OBC list.
The police opened fire when the protests turned violent.
The authorities have summoned additional forces from other areas of the state. Six companies of Rajasthan Armed Constabulary have been deployed on the Jaipur-Agra highway.
Twenty thousand police personnel have also been deployed across four other highways where protests are scheduled.
Quota politics
The police firing in Rajasthan's Dausa district lays bare the worst of quota politics.
The BJP had assured the Gujjar community before Assembly polls 2003 that they would be included in the ST category if the party won.
More than three years on, the BJP hasn't fulfilled its promise and is yet to recommend the community's case to the Centre
