Report on accidents
Children being piled up on cycle rickshaws, autos and vans is a common sight in Chennai. —
 INDIA , 30-May-2007  1:2:44 AM
The task force constituted to study the incidence of fatal road accidents involving schoolchildren will submit its report to the School Education Department in the next few days.

The recommendations are expected to be implemented in all schools in Tamil Nadu from this June.

The task force members told The Hindu that recommendations included fixing speed governors in all school vans and buses, making it mandatory for schools to have a Road Safety Patrol wing, formation of a road safety committee in each district (with representatives from the police and revenue departments, PTAs and NGOs) and banning use of cell phone and FM radio in vehicles while transporting children.

Observing an increase in the number of fatal road accidents among students, School Education Minister Thangam Thennarasu constituted the task force last July.

Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Sunil Kumar, who chairs the task force, said, "Right from the time a child leaves home to the time he or she gets back, we have taken into consideration all the possible threats to road safety and come up with solutions."

Association of Principals of Matriculation Schools president N. Vijayan said during the consultative meetings, principals emphasised the need for regular medical check-ups for drivers of school vans and buses. "They suggested that renewal of licences be linked with the drivers' health. They also recommended separate uniforms for drivers and attendants."

Global Positioning System-fitted vehicles to enable school managements and local police stations to monitor their operation and a uniform colour code for vans and school buses transporting school children are among the other recommendations.
