Heavy security in Rajasthan
The blockade comes almost 24 hours after the violent clashes killed 11 people in Dausa and other parts of eastern Rajasthan.
 INDIA , 30-May-2007  1:25:56 AM
A large number of Gujjar protesters are still blocking the Jaipur-Agra highway at Peepalkhera village.

The blockade comes almost 24 hours after the violent clashes killed 11 people in Dausa and other parts of eastern Rajasthan.

The protestors are with the bodies of five people killed in police firing on Tuesday. They are refusing to take away their dead till the government gives them compensation.

The situation in the area is still quite tense. Nearly 600 personnel of the Rajasthan Armed Constabulary have been deployed on the Jaipur-Agra highway, and the army could take out a flag march later on Wednesday.

Politicised issue

The protests began on Tuesday in support of the Gujjar community's demand for Scheduled Tribe status as promised by the BJP.

The agitation has also got politicised with Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje saying she did not make any such promise and that decision could only be taken by the Centre.

Raje called the clashes 'unfortunate' but has not announced any compensation for victims so far.

''Yesterday's violence was a very unfortunate incident. I will never let such violent elements succeed in Rajasthan. We are open to dialogue. Rajasthan's development is dependent on all of us and not one person alone,'' Raje added.

Congress MP Sachin Pilot, who represents Dausa in the Lok Sabha, has also angrily blamed the BJP government in Rajasthan for the violence.

Speaking to NDTV on Tuesday, he criticised the fact that no senior government representative was at the trouble spot all day.

The protests are continuing today, and the Gujjars plan to hold a mahapanchayat or mass meeting near Bharatpur during the day.

It took Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje more than 12 hours to reach Dausa from Delhi where she was attending a meeting of the National Development Council.

''All the roads were blocked so we took a flight and reached as soon as we could,'' she said.
