| It may look just like any construction site but it's the start of something very big.
A 28-floor new building that will be at least 29 metres taller than the Qutab Minar and will house the Municipal Corporation of Delhi's new headquarters.
Located on Minto Road near the New Delhi Railway Station, the building is scheduled to open on December 2008.
The cost of the building is Rs 565 crore.
Two of the five blocks will have offices of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi.
The other three blocks will be rented to private companies.
The expected rent is Rs 40 crore a year.
The civic centre is located in the heart of Delhi but the officials say there's nothing to be worried about regarding the building up of traffic there.
''We will bring in a new traffic plan around the area where the civic centre will be located,'' said Ravi Dass, Engineer-in-Chief, MCD.
''We have taken special care of the congestion. Since the civic centre is located around the station, traffic volumes is bound to increase but we will widen the approach road here and also work out a new traffic plan for the adjoining areas,'' he added.
It's going to be taller than the Qutab Minar and it's only a year away from being finished. Some people might be cynical about the promise, but one must still take a few minutes to stop by what's going to be a new landmark for the capital city.
