| The time for merely talking about interlinking rivers is over and it is time for action now, Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi said on Wednesday.
Talking to The Hindu , he said that the linking of the southern rivers — Godavari, Krishna and Cauvery — could be taken up immediately. This would be beneficial to all the States in the south, as the floodwaters of one system could benefit a rain-deficient region elsewhere.
Mr. Karunanidhi was hopeful that the Chief Ministers of the southern States would see the benefits and agree to the interlinking proposal.
The linking of Ganges with the southern rivers could be taken up at a later date given the complexities involved. But action should be taken on linking the main rivers in the southern States, he said.
"We have talked long enough," he said. "From the time of K.L.Rao [Union Irrigation Minister in the 1970s] we have been talking about interlinking. It is time we acted," he said. Mr. Karunanidhi recalled a suggestion he made then on how the interlinking could be made to work. In the hilly terrain, the gradient could be chosen carefully and electricity generated as water flowed down this gradient, he had said. "This suggestion was welcomed then. But it is unfortunate that we have only been talking since then," he said.
Tamil Nadu did not have a single perennial river originating in this State and was totally dependent on water from other States. It had encountered problems in river water sharing with Karnataka, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh.
