Cold facts on film
However, there are questions about how seriously the video is being taken in the trial.
 INDIA , 1-June-2007  2:14:41 AM
NDTV has exclusive pictures of a police video of evidence filmed at the site of the BMW case just hours after the incident.

However, there are questions about how seriously the video is being taken in the trial.

This was a crucial piece of evidence that could have sent the accused straight to jail, except that the police did not submit it to court for four years.

Gruesome accident

It was on a chilly winter morning on January 10, 1999, at 4.30 am (IST) that seven people were hit by a BMW car on Delhi's Lodhi Road.

It took just a few minutes for the car to mow down the people in a stretch that is barely 50 metres long, a testimony to how out of control the car was.

Official estimates later said the car was swinging erratically across the road at 100 km per hour.

The car drove away after hitting the seven people. Three men died immediately, three others died in the hospital and one survived.

Oil trail

At around 9:00 am (IST), the police called in a videographer to record the evidence they were uncovering.

The 30-minute film is available exclusively to NDTV.

The investigating officer tracked an oil leak from the site of the accident to a house about 1 km away in Golf Links, one of Delhi's most expensive neighbourhoods.

The house showed the same oil traces in its driveway, and at the end of the trail was the battered seven-series BMW.

Clear conclusion

The film, along with the initial testimony of key witnesses, led the police to conclude that the hit-and-run was caused by three young drunk men.

After the accident they raced to the house and washed the car in a desperate attempt to destroy evidence.

The three, who were charged with culpable homicide, included:

Sidharth Gupta, son of a Delhi financier, to whose house the BMW was brought after the accident

Manik Kapoor, whose family is into the hotel business. He was in the passenger seat that night
