Mumbai teenagers to appear
The teenagers were in a speeding Honda Accord and allegedly racing down the promenade after watching a film when the accident occurred.
 INDIA , 4-June-2007  0:41:27 AM
Five teenagers who hit and injured two street vendors on Mumbai's Carter Road on Saturday have been granted a day's bail by the court. They will be produced before a juvenile court today.

The teenagers were in a speeding Honda Accord and allegedly racing down the promenade after watching a film when the accident occurred.

They were taken into custody and charged with rash and negligent driving. The judge granted them bail because they are all minors.

''They deserve the bail. This offence is bailable. Tomorrow (Monday) we will produce them before the juvenile court which will decide action against them,'' said S S Gandhi, Defence lawyer.

The person behind the wheel is said to be the 17-year-old son of the proprietor of a coffee shop on Carter Road.

While the car is said to belong to Farhana Syyed, wife of late film producer Sultan Ahmed, her two sons were a part of the group.

The accident took place barely 500 metres away from the spot where six months ago, a drunk Alister Pereira crushed seven labourers while driving down the promenade.

Experts say, since the teenagers were behind the wheel, the person who owns the car - in this case Farhana Sayyed - is guilty of allowing children to use the vehicle, and can be punished.

The police have even fined her because the car's insurance was invalid.

''They will be charged with injuring a person and driving without a licence. But even if they are found guilty, they will not go to jail as they are treated differently under the Juvenile Justice Act,'' said Majeed Memon, Senior Advocate.

Meanwhile, one of the two injured, 46-year-old Omprakash Jaiswal has been discharged from hospital.
