Rajasthan on the edge
Each group has clearly demarcated their own territory and is willing to go any length to protect it.
 INDIA , 4-June-2007  0:45:24 AM
The Gujjar's demand for Schedule Tribe Status has polarised communities in Dausa.

It was like a war zone with roadblocks and armed Gujjar and Meena members holding the state literally on a knife's edge.

Each group has clearly demarcated their own territory and is willing to go any length to protect it.

Sikandara, which is only 75 kilometres from Dausa town, is now controlled by the Gujjars.

Every day, whenever they can, they vent their ire at anything representative of the state like the buses of the Rajasthan State Transport Corporation.

Loss of faith

As NDTV team, which took the National Highway 11 to enter Rajasthan, got closer, they shouted anti-administration slogans. They say they have lost faith in the administration.

''The SP and the DM are Meenas and we don't have faith in them,'' said a Gujjar resident.

Around the same time, news comes in that the Meenas have attacked a truck carrying food and essential supplies for the Gujjars at a place called Balaji More. It's about 10 kilometres from Peepalkhera village, the heart of the Gujjars protests.

''I have got ration from Bhiwadi. Our truck has been escorted by the police. But now there is

no trace of our driver and conductor,'' said a local.

After travelling about four km, the team is stopped at Thikariya, which is a Meena stronghold. When they spotted the television cameras, their anger came pouring out.

Targetting media

An effigy of local MP Sachin Pilot was also taken out and burnt. The Meenas hold him responsible for the Gujjar violence.

They also said that they have just attacked and burnt a truck carrying essential items for the Gujjars.
