Jaipur-Agra highway opens
Thousands of Gujjar agitators had been sitting on the highway at Peepalkheda in Dausa District demanding Scheduled Tribe status.
 INDIA , 5-June-2007  2:48:40 AM
The Jaipur-Agra highway has opened after seven days and traffic resumed after Gujjar leaders lifted their weeklong blockade.

Thousands of Gujjar agitators had been sitting on the highway at Peepalkheda in Dausa District demanding Scheduled Tribe status.

Hundreds of passengers were stranded at railway stations and on roads for days with no basic amenities. Trucks that had piled up on the highway are finally moving now.

The lifting of the blockade came after a compromise formula for peace was reached between Gujjar leader and Rajasthan Chief minister Vasundhara Raje.

A three-member commission has been set up the government headed by a retired High Court judge to look into the demands of the community.

The commission will submit its report in three months.

At least 25 people have been killed in the weeklong protest by Gujjars that had also spread to other states.

Deadlock ends

After the deadlocked was resolved Gujjar leader Col KS Bainsla apologised for the violence and said they had achieved their objective.

''We've got what we were asking for. We have reached an agreement in an atmosphere that was conducive for talks. If members of the public were inconvenienced because of our agitation, I sincerely apologise,'' said Bainsala.

The Meenas who had opposed the Gujjar demand also seemed satisfied with the peace formula.

''The agreement that has been reached will bring peace to the entire state. The State government has not written to the Centre about giving ST status to the Gujjars. This is in accordance with our wishes,'' said Kirori Lal Meena, Leader, Meena Community.

Matters spiraled out of control when the Meena community came out onto the streets to protest the Gujjars' demands for ST status.
