Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy (left), Union Minister and Union Minster of State for Shipping, Road Transport, and Highways T.R. Baalu
 INDIA , 7-June-2007  1:9:4 AM
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) on Wednesday agreed to implement the 250-km Intermediate Ring Road around the Bangalore Metropolitan Region at a cost of Rs. 2,580 crore to ease traffic congestion in Greater Bangalore. It will prepare a detailed project report (DPR) by January 2008.

The State Government will meet the cost of land acquisition while the NHAI will build the road, which will pass through Nelamangala, the southern parts of Dobbspet, Doddaballapur and Devanahalli, areas about 6 km from the proposed international airport, the eastern parts of Hoskote and Anekal, besides Harohalli, Bidadi and Magadi. The Intermediate Ring Road will come up between the proposed Peripheral Ring Road and the Satellite Towns Ring Road.

Union Minister for Surface Transport and Shipping T.R. Baalu agreed to implement the project following a request by Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy during a high-level meeting of officials of the NHAI and the Public Works Department held here on Wednesday to review the progress of road development works taken up by the NHAI in Karnataka.

Addressing a joint press conference with the Chief Minister after the meeting, Mr. Baalu said the NHAI would implement the project on the condition that Karnataka should meet the cost of land acquisition.

The project would be brought before the Union Cabinet for clearance.

The NHAI has agreed to build seven road over-bridges from Kodigehalli junction on Bellary Road in Bangalore till Devanahalli to provide smooth passage to the proposed international airport. The bridge would be built at the beginning and the end of the Devanahalli bypass, intersection of NH-7 and NH-207, Vidyanagar Cross at Betta Halasur, beginning and end of the Yelahanka bypass and Kodigehalli junction. The NHAI has been told to prepare a DPR for these bridges, which will be taken up under its Phase 7 development programmes.
