Unique tribute: For the love of Taj
Fifty-year-old Shahzada Asif Khan is madly in love with Mumtaz Mahal. He knows it's one-sided but that hardly matters.
 INDIA , 7-June-2007  1:23:22 AM
A native of Burhanpur in Madhya Pradesh is obsessed by the lady in whose memory Shah Jahan built the Taj Mahal, the monument of love.

Fifty-year-old Shahzada Asif Khan is madly in love with Mumtaz Mahal. He knows it's one-sided but that hardly matters.

Mumtaz who died on June 7, 1931 was buried in Burhanpur for six months before her body was exhumed and brought to Agra for the final burial.

It was because of Asif's untiring efforts that the neglected mausoleum was declared a listed structure by the ASI last year.

For the last 30 years, Asif has been observing Mumtaz's death anniversary and this time too a mushiara has been organised.

''Love is love. It is not necessary that you fall in love with a person who is alive. Yes, I am in love with Mumtaz Mahal. That is the only truth,'' he said.

People in the neighbouring Khargone district may not be so besotted by Mumtaz but they are sweating it out for the monument built in her name.

A revision of the list of seven wonders is on and a roadshow was organized to create awareness and encourage people across the state to vote for the Taj Mahal so that it gets a permanent place in the list.

''People from Khargone have already sent a lakh messages. The road show is to create awareness in the state and the country to make people vote and help Taj get the first place in the seven wonders,'' said Vinod Gaur, Organiser.

The whole country is proud of the beautiful Taj and if you also want the monument to get a place in the seven wonders, just type taj and SMS at 4567.
