Delhi struggles with power cuts
No electricity here for the past 15 hours is beginning to tell on 63-year-old Nirmala Jain.
 INDIA , 12-June-2007  1:31:28 AM
Delhiites are facing a tough time with the ever-soaring temperature in north India. To add to their woes are the frequent power cuts.

A power cut is painful no matter how short it is, but imagine what Delhiites in areas like Munirka, Rajender Nagar and Malviya Nagar are going through when their ordeal lasts as long as 12-15 hours.

It was 1 pm (IST) when the NDTV team met Nirmala Jain's family in south Delhi's Khirki Extension. The temperature outside was 44 degrees Celsius, four degrees above normal, and it wasn't any better inside.

No electricity here for the past 15 hours is beginning to tell on 63-year-old Nirmala Jain.

''There has been no power. Everything in the refrigerator has got spoilt. We had to throw away all our vegetables,'' she complains.

Frustrating experience

Her 35-year-old daughter-in-law Priyanka is a businesswoman spending most of her day at work. And coming home to a power cut is the most frustrating thing for her.

''We can't even turn on the motor without electricity. We've been spending money on water bottles. We have filed complaints and we are told it will come soon,'' she says.

Back-up invertors don't last more than four hours and it takes at least 12 hours to recharge them - but that's only once the power comes back.

It's worse for the children. This is the middle of their summer vacation and sitting at home without electricity is a frustrating experience.

Across Delhi, there are thousands of households like the Jains, which have been suffering up to 17-hour power cuts in areas like Munirka, Rajender Nagar and Malviya Nagar.

If this trend continues, the power distribution companies shouldn't be surprised if people come out onto the streets to protest.
