Chikungunya case reported in Delhi
The case was reported last week when a woman from this area tested positive for chikungunya.
 INDIA , 13-June-2007  2:7:36 AM
Kerala is battling with chikungunya, a viral infection that spreads through mosquitoes. The disease though not fatal in itself, can prove fatal if the patient is already suffering from another ailment.

The disease is not just limited to Kerala. The first case of chikungunya has been reported in Paharganj area of the capital as well.

The case was reported last week when a woman from this area tested positive for chikungunya.

Her blood sample had been sent for testing to the National Institute of Communicable diseases by the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital. But with the hospital having no records, there is simply no way to track her down.

''A lady's blood sample was taken by RML and sent to NICD. We tried to contact RML hospital but only the name and locality was given. They do not have the address. The details are not available with RML,'' said Dr Yadav, Health Director, MCD.

Taking no chances, the MCD says it has begun preventive measures in the locality, including fumigation and informing people to report cases of fever.

Measures they claim have been in place since the chikungunya alert in January.

''We've made action plans, training programmes, sensitisation programmes, participation of NGOs and RWAs. Each ward (there are 272 of them) will try to obtain maximum participation,'' said Dr Yadav, Health Director, MCD.

Last year, Delhi saw 66 cases of chikungunya. Hopefully, this year the government will be able to prevent rather than deal with an outbreak.
