Indian strike hits air traffic
Seven morning flights out of Kolkata have also been cancelled and four flights rescheduled.
 INDIA , 14-June-2007  2:59:41 AM
There is chaos across India's airports as over 12,000 workers of the airline Indian went on strike on Tuesday, demanding a better pay.

Several flights were delayed or cancelled on Wednesday, leaving thousands of stranded passengers. The strike is set to continue today as well.

Thirteen morning flights out of Mumbai have been cancelled, including three flights to Delhi, three each to Coimbatore, Kolkata, Chennai and flights to Rajasthan, Raipur, Bangalore and Thiruvananthapuram.

Seven morning flights out of Kolkata have also been cancelled and four flights rescheduled.

Eight flights out of Delhi to Bangalore, Mumbai, Lucknow, Chandigarh, Srinagar, Ranchi and Jodhpur have been cancelled, while a flight to Chennai has been delayed.

On Wednesday only 127 out of 192 scheduled flights took off.

Benefit package

Talks between the employee unions and the management broke down after the employees rejected the management's benefit package of Rs 267 crore.

The government, however, was not willing to back down, sending suspension notices to 23 employees.

The Union accuses the management of going back on its assurances for wage arrears and better promotion prospects.

The Civil Aviation Ministry reacted angrily suspending 22 employees and threatening to take strict action against the striking employees. It even threatened a lock out if striking employees don't return to work.

The union says the Ministry has not given it a fair hearing.

''We would carry on our agitation even at the cost of suspension. We have 13,000 employees on our side. We will get the Civil Aviation ministry to close down,'' said J K Bodola, General Secretary, AIR Corporation Employees Union.

The Delhi High Court termed the strike as ''illegal''. The court had also asked the agitating employees to resume duty at the earliest but despite court's order Indian employees said they would continue the strike.
