| NDA backs Shekhawat for President |

| The NDA decides to back Vice President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat for the post of Indian President, reports on Monday said.
The alliance was at talks a short while ago to choose a consensus candidate.
Earlier, the NDA's Atal Behari Vajpayee, a former prime minister, turned down a request by the governing UPA that its nominee Prathiba Patil be the consensus candidate.
The Shiv Sena says it will announce its position on the presidential election on Tuesday.
The vote is scheduled for July 19.
Third contestant
The third political grouping - known as the Third Front is also meeting in Chennai on Monday to name its nominee.
Reports indicate the front will not back Patil or Shekawat.
The front includes regional parties - the AIADMK of former Tamil Nadu chief minister Jayalalithaa, the Telugu Desam Party, the Samajwadi Party and eight others.
