Piped gas for 23 municipalities
Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy at the meeting with officials of the Krishna Godavari Gas Network Limited in Hyderabad
 INDIA , 19-June-2007  1:36:54 AM
Piped gas to domestic connections will become a reality in 23 municipalities across the State by the end of 2008, if the efforts of the Government fructify.

The Krishna Godavari Gas Network Limited, a special purpose vehicle with 26 per cent Government equity, has been asked by Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy to complete laying of pipelines for selected municipalities by June-end next year. The first phase of the work is expected to cost Rs. 4,800 crore–Rs. 3,500 crore for transmission and balance for setting of city gas distribution (CGD) network.

Gas would be provided through CGD networks in selected cities through the Gujarat State Petroleum Corporation, an equity partner in the SPV. The SPV has been asked to identify the routes and prepare an action plan to commence works on laying pipelines by November this year.

The first phase of work includes setting up of Kakinada-Rajahmundry and Visakhapatnam city CGD networks. Dr. Reddy, who reviewed the progress of work with senior officials and equity partners of the SPV here on Monday, wanted them to ensure that the State secured the quantum of gas required by 2008 to meet the demand. Briefing reporters after the meeting, Ports and Infrastructure Minister M. Venkataramana Rao said the price of gas would come down significantly once the State’s allocation was firmed up by the Centre.

Work on creating the pipeline network throughout the State would be taken up at an estimated cost of Rs. 40,000 crore. A survey to identify the routes and possible bottlenecks had already been launched. Dr. Reddy also approved the release of State’s equity of Rs. 63 crore in the SPV of which allocation of Rs. 30 crore was made in the budget, he added.

Vijay Kelkar, chairman of IDFC Equity Pvt Ltd, one of the major players in the SPV, Infrastructure Corporation of Andhra Pradesh managing director L.V. Subramanyam and other senior officials were present.
