| The government of Andhra Pradesh has described the increase in price of vegetabels as an 'all-India phenomenon'.
But vendors blamed the price surge in the last few days on big retailers.
At markets in Hyderabad - French beans sells at Rs 48/kilogram, ribbed gourd at Rs 20, potato at Rs 16, carrot at Rs 40 and beetroot at Rs 20.
A vendor said ''it is not because of the rains but because big retail outlets are buying huge quantities, pushing up the rates.
''We have no option but to also buy and sell at high rates''.
Another vendor said ''because all these vegetables come from Bangalore and the supply is only one-fourth of the usual''.
A buyer said ''tomato is selling at Rs 30/kilogram and bhindi at Rs 50-60 . We are neither able to buy the vegetables nor avoid buying them. Our fear is that if the prices go up even more what are we going to do.''
