Congress asserts Patil as nominee
Prime Minister Singh is expected to meet Kalam to convey his party's stand in the presidential race.
 INDIA , 19-June-2007  3:59:36 AM
The presidential nominee of the governing UPA Pratibha Patil is expected to file her nomination papers this week, reports said.

On Tuesday, the Congress party leader Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh signed papers that confirms Patil's nomination.

On Monday the focus shifted to President APJ Abdul Kalam after the United National Progessive Alliance said it backed a second term for Kalam.

Prime Minister Singh is expected to meet Kalam to convey his party's stand in the presidential race.

If elected, Patil will become India's first woman president. The vote is scheduled for July 19.

Maharashtra based Shiv Sena is caught between the BJP and its ideology of favouring Maharashtrians for top posts - and Patil fits the bill.

The Shiv Sena had said it will name its choice for President on Tuesday.

Kalam backers

The UNPA or third front, which backs Kalam, is a grouping of regional parties including Tamil Nadu's AIADMK, the TDP of Andhra Pradesh, the Samajwadi Party and a few others.

The front's leaders said they will meet Kalam on Wednesday to make a formal request to contest in the election.

Reacting to the developement, independent candidate Vice President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat said: ''Nothing would give me greater satisfaction than President [Kalam] consenting for this''.

''Total unanimity of all parties is imperative, I would be happy if that were achieved,'' said Shekhawat who is backed by the NDA.
