| Leaders of the United National Progressive Alliance will meet President APJ Abdul Kalam on Wednesday in Delhi to persuade him to seek re-election.
The decision to field Kalam was taken at a meeting of the UNPA in Chennai last week. But it is unlikely that President Kalam will agree to a second term.
The leaders meeting President Kalam on Wednesday include Mulayam Singh Yadav of the Samajwadi Party, Chandrababu Naidu of the TDP and others.
AIADMK leader Jayalalithaa, whose party is part of the Third Front, will not be coming for the meeting, as a party statement from Chennai says she's unwell.
Instead three senior AIADMK leaders will represent her.
The Third Front leaders will also hold a short meeting among themselves before meeting with President Kalam.
Earlier, the Shiv Sena had signaled support for Pratibha Patil, the nominee of the governing UPA as the new President of India.
Shiv Sena, a key partner in the opposition National Democratic Allaince (NDA) on Tuesday also said it will not back incumbent President APJ Abdul Kalam.
''The final decision on Sena's candidate for President will be taken on June 25. As far as Shekhawat and Kalam are concerned, some say Shekhawat will withdraw if Kalam decides to contest.''
''But if that happens, whom are we supposed to support? We will not support Kalam. He has lost place in my heart,'' said Bal Thackeray, Chief, Shiv Sena.
But the NDA indicated Vice President Bhairon Singh Shekhwat, the candidate it supports, will pull out of the race if there was consensus for Kalam.
