| The Maharashtra government has approached the Centre with a proposal for more stringent laws on drunken driving.
The move comes after 21-year-old Alister Pareira got off with just a six-months sentence from a fast track court after running over and killing seven people in 2006.
''We have sent a proposal to the Centre asking them to make drunken driving a non-bailable offence, punishable with seven years,'' said R R Patil, Maharashtra Home Minister.
''We are waiting for the Centre's reply''.
Let off easy
The charge of culpable homicide is often applied to drunken driving cases but usually does not hold in court.
One such case was that of Puru Rajkumar, actor Raj Kumar's son, who ran over pavement dwellers in 1993 killing three people and crippling one.
He was let off after paying Rs 30,000 to each of the families of the dead.
In a late night drive conducted on Wednesday, Mumbai police found 214 cases of drunken driving and 90 cases of rash driving in just three hours.
The shocking statistic will probably help the state government convince the Centre of its case.
