| 8 children hurt as van overturns |

| Eight school students were injured when a van turned turtle at Chetpet here on Monday. They were admitted to hospital.
The accident happened when the driver, R.Thayumanavan (29), tried to avoid a speeding goods van coming in the opposite direction on McNichols Road.
Suspecting that the driver was under the influence of alcohol, the police said investigations were also on to ascertain whether a technical snag in the vehicle caused the accident.
The van was carrying around 20 children from three different schools in and around Pachayappa’s College Hostel Road. They were in the age group of 10 to 15 years.
The police said the children were pulled out of the van by local residents. While a girl suffered injuries near her eye, a boy complained of pain in his ribs.
A parent who rushed to the nursing home said schools should be made accountable for the safety of students. Though a challenging task, they should examine the issue threadbare in the interest of the children, he said.
