| EMU services on the Chennai-Arakkonam and Chennai-Gummidipoondi suburban sections were disrupted for about two hours on Tuesday morning with motormen going on a flash strike, protesting against the suspension of a colleague on Monday.
A Chennai Railway Division official said the driver of a Chennai Moore Market Complex-bound EMU service jumped the red signal and was suspended and sent for medical examination. Condemning the action, EMU drivers began a tool-down-strike at 9.30 a.m. This resulted in the suspension of 18 services.
The drivers refused to withdraw the strike even as the administration’s asserted that the suspension conformed to procedure. The striking motormen claimed it was signal failure. After negotiations, the authorities agreed to withdraw the suspension, but refused to allow the “suspended” driver to resume work till a departmental enquiry was completed. Normality was restored at about 11.45 a.m.
