| The Indian government has started urgent moves to acquire a letter written by Mahatma Gandhi that is to be auctioned in Britain.
London based auction house Christie's said anyone including governments can bid for the letter on July 3.
But reports say Indian government procedures do not allow bidding.
In the letter written for Harijan, 19 days before Gandhi was assassinated, he pleads for tolerance towards Muslims.
Soft on Muslims
Thomas Venning with Christie's said, ''the Gandhi letter is great. It was written very shortly before he died - and it's about the issue effectively that killed him.
''He was killed by a Hindu fanatic, because he urged moderate policy toward Muslims.''
The opening bid for the letter is 12,000 UK pounds.
Two Gandhians - Basant Kumar Birla and Satya Paul have asked the Indian government to stop the auction.
Rare collection
The letter is part of the Albin Schram Collection which includes letters from Napolean, Winston Churchill and Sigmund Freud.
Gandhi led India's independence struggle to free the nation from British rule.
On January 30, 1948 a Hindu activist shot Gandhi in the chest at point blank range in Delhi
