Dera chief faces arrest
The Punjab Government has made it clear that there is a strong prima facie case against the Dera chief.
 INDIA , 28-June-2007  1:42:24 AM
The Punjab government has given a go-ahead for the arrest of Dera Saccha Sauda chief Baba Gurmeet Singh Ram Rahim.

The Punjab Government has made it clear that there is a strong prima facie case against the Dera chief.

''There is a prima facie case against him. There is no doubt about that,'' said S S Mattewal, Advocate General, Punjab.

Earlier this month, a Bathinda court had issued an arrest warrant against the Dera chief, subject to permission from the state government.

Baba Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh of the Dera Sacha Sauda is meeting with his followers at the Dera's headquarters in Sirsa on Thursday.

The Dera is considering legal options like approaching the local magistrate.

The Dera chief had sparked off violence in Punjab last month after dressing up in the attire of the 10th Sikh Guru Gobind Singh.

Apology rejected

The permission to arrest the Dera chief came on Wednesday, hours after the Akal Takht, the highest Sikh body, rejected the second apology sent by him.

The apology was rejected on the grounds that the letter neither said the Dera chief had committed a blunder, nor did it mention that such mistakes would not be repeated.

Earlier on Wednesday, the Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee too had turned down the apology, saying it was not sincere enough.

Show of strength

The Committee now plans to hold a massive congregation of Sikhs from all over the world on July 11 at Ratiya near Sirsa, the Dera's headquarters.

''We have called for a meeting on July 11 at Ratiya to put pressure on the Haryana government to arrest the Dera chief,'' said Gyani Joginder Singh Vedanti.

Menahwile, the Dera chief seems to have cancelled a scheduled visit to Uttar Pradesh. He is staying put in Sirsa in Haryana, the Dera headquarters, and conferring with his followers.
