| In an unheard of case, a doctor has filed a negligence case against himself.
Dr Pradyot Kumar Naskar, who practices on the outskirts of Kolkata, had operated on 32-year-old Prabhabati Patra on June 18, and accidentally perforated her uterus while conducting an abortion.
Patra died three days later.
Admitting his fault, Naskar filed a complaint of medical negligence against himself.
''According to my conscience, what I have thought at that moment, I have done. Whatever action will be taken by the judiciary against me, I welcome that.''
''I have no regrets about that; I only regret the incident,'' said Dr PK Naskar.
The police have registered an FIR. However, since Patra's family hasn't lodged a complaint, Naskar hasn't been arrested yet.
The case is now with a medical board for its verdict.
''This is the first time that I or any other officers that I have spoken to have heard of such a case. The medical board, which consists of district doctors, is looking into this.''
''It will take three weeks to complete the enquiries,'' said SN Gupta, SP, South 24 Parganas.
Local residents, however, are standing by the doctor.
''The doctor is good. He has treated so many people here,'' said Tarak Nath Bardhan, Resident.
While the police wait for the medical board's report, doctors are debating how this first-of-it's-kind case should be dealt with.
